Grace really likes doing the same things every day and doesn’t like it when things change, even a little bit. Even though we try to make after-school fun, she doesn’t want to join in. When she first came to our room, she didn’t talk for about three months. She didn’t seem happy during Chinese New Year when we had lots of activities. We talked about something called selective mutism in class recently, so I decided to learn more about it. I want to help Grace and other kids who feel anxious like her.

As an adult a busy loud stimulating environment can be overwhelming for us too. So as children that environment can be very intimidating, smaller group sizes throughout the day makes for a richer environment and more personalized attention to children.

This is useful information for many of the children and for many programs we don’t break into small groups enough.
